Please scroll down for the English version – UNNC School of Education and English graduates shine bright on world stage.

UNNC School of Education and English graduates shine bright on world stage

Xinyu Liao, an English Language and Applied Linguistics graduand of the University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC), has recently received admittance letters for language-related master’s degrees from universities such as the University of Chicago, the National University of Singapore, University College London, the University of Edinburgh, and the University of Virginia.

In the School of Education and English, there are many other graduands like Xinyu Liao who have received offers from top universities. Some continue the academic research they began at UNNC, whereas others move onto different industries. Because of the wide-ranging curriculum and various modules on offer at the School of Education and English, graduates have unlimited opportunities for further study and employment.

Xinyu notes how the degree programme covers a wide range of areas including neurolinguistics, language education and acquisition, news text analysis, speech therapy, etc. Xinyu said, “Due to a wide range of modules being covered at undergraduate level, we have the opportunity to explore our own interests, which helps to lay the foundation for us to determine our research direction in the future.”

During the programme, Xinyu had the opportunity to conduct linguistic scientific research into gender cognition and a reaction speed test for third-person singular pronouns. The experience peaked Xinyu’s interest in scientific research and strengthened his determination to continue linguistic research overseas.

Jingbo Zhang, a 2018 English with International Business graduate of UNNC, is now working as a fully qualified speech therapist. Speech therapy is an emerging field that combines medicine, linguistics, psychology, neurology, and cognitive science. Jingbo was inspired by UNNC Professor Lixian Jin during her undergraduate studies. “It was Professor Jin who introduced me to speech therapy. The more I learned, the more interested I became, and it gradually determined the future direction of my profession.”

After graduating from UNNC, she successfully received an admittance letter from University College London for a Master’s degree in linguistics, and then worked briefly as a speech therapist in a hospital in the UK. Currently, she is working in a pediatric clinic in Shanghai in the field of speech therapy, helping children with special needs to develop language comprehension and communication skills such as those with autism, learning disabilities, dyslexia, hearing impairments, and stuttering.

Lingyi Zhu, another UNNC graduate, has received Master’s degree offers from Oxford University, Cambridge University, University College London and the University of Hong Kong. Lingyi believes that it was not only her academic performance, but also her extensive practical experiences at UNNC that helped her to obtain offers from the world’s top universities.

One of the ways Lingyi gained practical experience was by participating in projects such as those organised by the Young Volunteers Association, bringing special classes to children with hearing impairment every week to encourage them to speak up. She also interned at the Wellington Bilingual Kindergarten in Hangzhou, focusing on early bilingual learning for young children. “I never needed to look for off-campus resources, all of these opportunities were provided by the university,” Lingyi shared.

Lingyi has recently returned to Hangzhou from Oxford University and will soon be joining a primary school in Hangzhou in August this year. “I chose to take up employment now to familiarise myself with a language learning environment and to better lay a practical foundation for my future linguistic studies. I will also be pursuing a PhD in the future.”

The School of Education and English at UNNC offers three programmes: English Language and Applied Linguistics, English Language and Literature, and English with International Business. In addition to the basic subjects of Applied Linguistics, International Higher Education, Teaching English to Speakers of Other Language (TESOL) and English-Chinese Translation, the School also covers a wide range of fields such as cognitive neurology, literature and drama. It has been described by many graduates and alumni as one of the most interdisciplinary Schools at UNNC.
